Bainbridge Island fire crews have been dispatched to a brush fire near Madison Avenue and Torvanger Road.

Initial reports came in around 4 p.m. Monday of a brush fire in the woods about a quarter mile south of Torvanger Road off Madison Avenue.

“Units are on the scene now,” said Fire Marshall Luke Carpenter. “It’s a smoldering fire in the woods.”

“It’s about 40 feet in diameter,” he added. “It’s smoldering — no flames.”

Fire crews are putting it out with a combination of water and digging into the soil with shovels and axes.

Carpenter said that the islander who reported the fire said he could smell smoke for a couple of days before he called 911 Monday, yet he did not see any flames. But Carpenter noted that is often the case with brush fires.

“The underbrush we have around here, the fires smolder, you often don’t see flames, just smoke,” he said.

The fire was the second on Madison Avenue on July 15. A fire destroyed a radio transmitter building on Madison Avenue early Monday morning.
