The 75th anniversary commemoration ceremony of the forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans from Bainbridge Island took place at the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial today.
Islanders, dignitaries, internment survivors and their families congregated at the memorial to mark the occasion, including Washington Governor Jay Inslee, Bainbridge Island Mayor Val Tollefson, author Mary Woodward, daughter of famed Bainbridge Island Review editors Walt and Milly Woodward — outspoken critics of the internment — as well as the chairman of the Suquamish Tribal Council and several prominent leaders of local religious groups too.
The ceremony was hosted by Clarence Moriwaki, President of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community.
Here are some initial photographs of the historic occasion, taken by the Review’s own Luciano Marano. And be sure, also, to check out next week’s issue (April 7) for full coverage of the event.
