FIT4MOM gets mothers moving with baby friendly workouts

Staying fit is no walk in the park. Unless, that is, you are on a FIT4MOM Stroller Stride in Battle Point Park — in which case you’re on the right track.

Staying fit is no walk in the park.

Unless, that is, you are on a FIT4MOM Stroller Stride in Battle Point Park — in which case you’re on the right track.

FIT4MOM, the largest fitness organization dedicated to supporting and inspiring mothers in the nation, will launch Stroller Strides — a total fitness program that moms can do with or without their stroller-aged children — on Bainbridge Island and in Poulsbo this summer, starting with a free introductory class and informational session at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 24 at Battle Point Park.

Magda Pratt, the founder and head trainer of the newly formed Bainbridge-Poulsbo branch of the national group, said that FIT4MOM offers a unique and supportive environment for moms looking to get healthy and fit exercise back into their schedules.

“That’s what I love about FIT4MOM,” she said. “It wasn’t anyone competing against each other. Everyone knows that we’re all moms and we’re in the same boat.”

Taught by FIT4MOM-certified and specially trained instructors, the Stroller Strides workouts are great for any level of exerciser, Pratt added.

“It can be paired to how difficult you want it,” she said. “We tailor every workout.”

Stroller Strides instructors weave songs and activities into the workout, which is designed to entertain and engage babies as well, while engaging moms in a series of exercises.

Each class includes running, power walking and intervals of strength and body toning exercises using exercise tubing, the stroller and the existing environment.

“It’s not necessarily about, ‘Let’s go and lose weight,’” Pratt explained of the customizable program. “It’s more about becoming healthy and becoming a healthy role model for your child.”

The program seeks to accomplish four main goals, Pratt said, including helping moms achieve their ultimate potential, both physically and emotionally, offering support and education for moms, inspiring moms to reach optimal health and well-being while inspiring children to emulate their moms and make fitness a part of their lives as they age.

Pratt said she discovered FIT4MOM while living in West Seattle and found herself having trouble getting back into a fitness regiment due to some postpartum depression and anxiety.

Though both she and her husband had been very fitness oriented — attending regular CrossFit classes and experimenting with a Paleolithic diet — she found herself struggling to get back into things after having her first baby.

Then she joined a FIT4MOM group.

“I became hooked,” she remembered.

Then, after having a second child, she and her husband, a Bainbridge native, moved to the island to raise their kids and she became determined to bring the benefits of the group with her and became certified through the national corporate program.

FIT4MOM classes, Pratt said, are a “safe environment.”

Unlike most classes or group activities, she said, if your baby should start to cry, “no one is going to look at you sideways.”

Tears are, she laughed, just another part of every mom’s day.

Participants should bring with them a stroller, water bottle, towel, sneakers and anything that their baby might need (snacks, diapers, toys, etc.), Pratt said.

Though, she added, many moms sometimes choose to come alone as well.

Children are welcome as long as they are young enough to fit in the stroller (generally pre-kindergarden) and all prospective participants should get their doctor’s approval before attempting any physical activity.

Pratt said that FIT4MOM suggests moms wait at least six weeks after giving birth to get back into working out.
