Former councilman hopes to rejoin Bainbridge council

A familiar face is looking to rejoin the Bainbridge Island City Council.

Wayne Roth has submitted an application to serve in the seat left empty by the resignation of Mike Scott, the Central Ward councilman who stepped down this month after he was appointed a judge in King County Superior Court.

Roth, 74, served a single four-year term on the city council in District 5 that ended in December 2017. He sought re-election last November, but was defeated by political newcomer Rasham Nassar (who took 58 percent of the vote, compared to Roth’s 41 percent.)

Roth submitted his application late this week and is the first candidate for the post. A 20-year-plus Bainbridge resident, Roth retired four years ago from KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio, where he had been president and general manager.

The city of Bainbridge Island will continue to accept applications for Council Position 4, the vacant council seat, until 4 p.m. Friday, April 13. Applicants must be a registered voter living in the Central Ward and a Bainbridge Island resident for the past year.

The city council will choose the new Position 4 council member in April.

The council will conduct candidate interviews at a special city council meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19 and pick a new council member that same evening.

The new council member will take the oath of office at the council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24.
