Former islander Art Koura passes away

Art Koura, a graduate of the Bainbridge High School Class of 1937 and a member of the Army’s famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II, died Dec. 29 in Seattle. He was 96.

Art Koura, a graduate of the Bainbridge High School Class of 1937 and a member of the Army’s famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II, died Dec. 29 in Seattle. He was 96.

Koura was born in 1918 in Seattle and lived most of his life on Bainbridge Island. He and his family had the largest strawberry farm on Bainbridge Island.

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team is the most decorated unit in Army history, and was made up of Japanese Americans, many of whom had family members in internment camps during the war.

Koura, who was wounded in France while with the 442nd, returned to berry farming on the island after the war.
