Former Wilkes teacher to return as principal

School district also names new assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction

Amii Pratt is going back to the school where her teaching career began more than a decade ago.

Pratt will be the new principal of Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary School, the Bainbridge Island School District announced Monday.

Pratt is currently the associate principal at Sonoji Sakai Intermediate School. She will replace current principal Sheryl Belt, who starts on July 1 as the district’s new assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction.

“Amii will be an outstanding principal for Wilkes Elementary School,” said Belt, who served on the selection committee. “Her strong background in quality instruction and deep dedication to the continual learning of both students and teachers will support the Wilkes community in their ongoing quest for improvement.”

Pratt started on Bainbridge as a teacher at Wilkes in 2002, where she was a first- and second-grade teacher, and has also taught at Ordway Elementary School and at Peter S. Ogden Elementary School in Vancouver, Wash.

She has held numerous leadership positions in both the Vancouver and Bainbridge Island school districts. Pratt served as the coordinator for the English language learners program in Vancouver, and served the Bainbridge Island School District as a teacher on special assignment for English language arts and on the Teacher/Principal Evaluation Project.

Pratt, 36, has a master’s degree in teaching from Oregon State University.

The Bainbridge district also announced its new director of career and technical education this week.

Peggy Templeton will take over as director on July 1.

School district officials said Templeton comes to the district with a rich academic background and a long history of leadership in career and technical education programs.

Templeton earned a bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition at the University of Washington and a master’s degree in education at Seattle Pacific University. She has taught CTE classes in Kent, South Kitsap and Central Kitsap. Templeton also served as an administrative intern, an acting principal, and a school improvement coordinator and assessment director for 13 districts in the Olympic Educational Service District. She is currently the director of the North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center in Port Angeles, which serves students from five districts in 14 different CTE programs.

“Peggy brings to our district a wealth of knowledge and experience in career and technical education,” said Superintendent Faith Chapel. “Her energy, enthusiasm, commitment to students and leadership skills are attributes that have been evident throughout her career, and we are fortunate to have her joining us.”
