Bainbridge Police reported the following incidents:
JUNE 28
10:43 a.m. An unattended vehicle was found blocking a wheelchair access at Sportsman Club Road and North Town Drive during the Rotary Auction. An auction volunteer made two announcements that the vehicle would be towed. No one responded to the vehicle and it was impounded.
8:04 p.m. Officers on the police boat observed a Bayliner yacht speeding through the 5 knot zone off the Eagle Harbor repair yard. The marine unit stopped the Bayliner and contacted its operator, who said he didn’t realize that the no-wake zone extended so far out into the harbor. The operator was warned for speeding and failure to provide current registration.
JUNE 29
1:48 a.m. A Bainbridge juvenile was arrested for driving under the influence after pushing his car into a ditch on Venice Loop. A resident reported that the car had pulled into his driveway and shut off. He said he saw the boy try to start the vehicle several times before getting out and pushing it off of the driveway and into a ditch. When police arrived the juvenile was unconcious behind the wheel, and noted a strong smell of alcohol wafting from the car’s rolled-down windows. An officer shook the juvenile awake, at which point the youth mumbled incoherently and tried to start the car. The officer removed the keys from the ignition. The juvenile’s eyes were bloodshot, and he said he wasn’t sure where he was. But he insisted he had not consumed alcohol and refused sobriety tests. He was arrested and placed in the patrol car. A search of the vehicle turned up two crushed cans of Natural Ice beer, an aluminum foil pipe containing marijuana residue and two packages of fireworks. The vehicle was impounded and the items were placed in evidence. The boy was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center in Port Orchard.
1:46 p.m. A Honda Odyssey stopped on Miller Road to make a left turn and was rearended by a Subaru Legacy. The Subaru’s driver said he had been tuning the car’s stereo and hadn’t seen the Honda stop. He was cited, and both vehicles were towed from the scene.
3:13 p.m. A Bainbridge driver ran a stop sign on Peterson Hill Road at Bergman Road and the 2004 VW Beetle she was driving collided with a Qwest cable box before coming to rest in a ditch. The driver said she was unfamiliar with the vehicle. She was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign.
7:58 p.m. A Blake Island park ranger requested police assistance to deal with a group of apparently intoxicated boaters, who were blasting loud music. The marine unit responded and located the boat off Southworth Drive. There were four to five people on board and the boat’s lights were turning on and off. The boat was trailered before officers could make contact and no patrol officers onshore were available to respond.
JUNE 30
2:07 a.m. A Wing Point Way resident reported $140 stolen from his home. He told the responding officer that he had left the money out on a coffee table after loaning cash to a friend earlier that night. He said a second friend had then come to visit. The resident had taken a nap and when he awoke the friend said he was leaving to go downtown. After his friend departed, the resident noticed the cash was missing from the table. He was unable to locate the friend and called 911. He said the suspect often hangs out in a wooded area near Ace Hardware. Police contacted several men in the woods but were unable to locate the suspect.
6:54 a.m. A Kingston resident reported his 2002 VW Jetta stolen from the Diamond Parking lot. The man said he had left his vehicle in the lot on the morning of June 27 and discovered it missing June 30. He said he had locked the vehicle and that it had a working alarm system. It was confirmed that the car had not been towed and a stolen vehicle report was issued.
9:18 a.m. A citizen turned in a black purse he found in a city owned parking lot near the ferry terminal. The purse contained cosmetic and toiletry items, but no valuables or identification information. It was entered into found property.
4:59 p.m. It was reported that the windows of two school buses were broken during high school graduation festivities June 16. The buses had been carrying graduates on a traditional “senior cruise” during which water balloons are often thrown at busses. This year the windshield of one bus and the passenger window of another bus were broken by water balloons near the roundabout.
6:59 p.m. Explosions from fireworks were reported on Grow Avenue. An officer contacted a man who was known from past incidents. The man appeared intoxicated and admitted to setting off fireworks, but said he was out of explosives and done for the evening. He was cited for illegal discharge of fireworks.
10:59 p.m. A car struck a deer on High School Road east of Fletcher Bay Road. The vehicle was traveling 35 mph. No injuries were reported.
JULY 1
12 p.m. A Bainbridge woman reported the fraudulent use of her credit card following a stay at Harrison Hospital. She said that following her visit to the hospital her credit card was used by an unknown person to make purchases at the hospital’s cafeteria and for purchases through telemarketers. The woman said she suspected that a hospital employee had stolen her card number. Hospital security staff were contacted and said they would investigate. No suspects.
4:02 p.m. Police were advised that a man had attempted to lure an 8-year-old boy into his car on Baker Hill Road. Police interviewed the boy who said he had been on his bike in front of his home when a white car with a racing spoiler drove up next to him. The driver of the car asked the boy if he wanted candy and the boy said “no.” The boy said the driver repeated the question “two or three times,” before the boy became frightened and went home to tell his father. A vehicle matching description was found parked on Lynwood Center Road. An officer drove the boy and a family member to the scene to see if the boy could identify the vehicle. While observing the vehicle a man walked into view and the boy said “that’s him, that’s the guy.” The suspect at first denied any wrongdoing but eventually admitted to having offered the child candy because he thought it would be funny; a story corroborated by the man’s friends. The case was forwarded to prosecutors for possible charging.
JULY 2
10:57 a.m. A Florida woman reported that she had lost her wallet June 29 while shopping at Safeway. The wallet contained a driver’s license , a credit card and $200.
1:29 p.m. A Bainbridge woman reported that she was missing two rings from her home, but wasn’t sure whether they had been misplaced or stolen. One was a gold ring valued at $800. The other was a gold ring with a blue sapphire inset and diamond studs valued at $8,000. She recalled last seeing the rings on June 5.
4:31 p.m. A van was stopped on SR-305 at Day Road. Its driver was cited for driving while suspended and for failure to provide proof of insurance.
2:32 p.m. An elderly Bainbridge couple reported that their adopted daughter, whom they had not had contact with in many years, was attempting to extort property from them. The daughter contacted her father in May, saying that she felt she was “owed” the family’s farm. Over the following weeks the couple said the daughter continued to call them. The daughter insinuated that they had abused her when she was a child and said she would file criminal charges and write a book if they did not give her the family farm. A report was forwarded to adult protective services were contacted.
11:41 p.m. A vehicle was stopped on SR-305 near Winslow Way after a records check showed its license plate was suspended. The driver’s license was suspended. The driver was cited for both violations.
JULY 3
2:56 a.m. Police responded to Fire Station 23 where a mother reported her 19-year-old daughter was having an anxiety attack in there vehicle. The girl was screaming uncontrollably and incoherently. Police helped calm the daughter and she was taken to Harrison Hospital.
10:45 p.m. Officers responded to a roll over collisiojn near Moran Road and Yaquina Avenue. Car had reportedly flipped over into
