A diverse cast of female-identifying, trans-identifying, gender-fluid and non-gender-conforming actors will perform in an upcoming play on Bainbridge Island

“Men on Boats,” by Jaclyn Backhaus, will run from Oct. 11-27 at Rolling Bay Hall.

This inventive, gender-bending reimagining of John Wesley Powell’s 1869 Colorado River expedition is being put on by inD Theatre, its news release says.

It adds that the play offers a fresh perspective on exploration and leadership, blending humor, drama and reflection as it explores themes of bravery, ambition and human complexity.

Directed by Talena Laine, the production includes a regional cast led by Reese Sigman as Powell, alongside crew members played by Chelsey Sheppard, Sarah Rodler, Meagan Kirby, Helene Minassian, Ronan Pirkle, Fiona Palazzi, Colleen Gillon, Tessa “Cricket” James and Izzy Laws.

The creative team, including scenic designer Erik Furuheim, lighting and sound designer Eli Backer, and costume designer Dawn Janow, has crafted an immersive environment that brings the wilderness to life, the release says. Movement coach Ken Michels has helped the cast convey the dangers of the expedition using minimalist props.

The semi-professional show is free with optional donations. Reservations can be made at indtheatre.org/men-on-boats. The play runs Thursdays through Sundays, with a 5 p.m. showing Oct. 27.
