Led by even-par performances from sophomores Rick Ulloa and Paul DeBarros, the Bainbridge High boys golf team opened their Metro League season with a solid home win over Seattle Prep, Eastside Catholic, and Nathan Hale Monday afternoon at Wing Point.

Ulloa and DeBarros shared first place honors with Kyle Miller of Eastside, each with rounds of 35 for the front nine holes.

Metro league matches are scored using a form of Stableford scoring which awards one point for each double bogey scored during the nine hole round, two points for each bogey, three points for par, four for birdie and five for eagle.

An even-par round scores 27 points, which both Ulloa, DeBarros and Eastside’s Miller tallied. Augmenting the two even-par rounds for the Sparts were solid efforts by sophomore Austin Hurt, who penciled in a one over par for 26 points, and senior Bobby Campbell, who was three over par for 24 points.

Metro scoring rules only tally the best four scores from the five starting players, so Jamie Neill’s six over par for 21 points did not affect the team total. It was, however, a very credible showing for the freshman’s inaugural varsity appearance.

The Spartan team total of 104 points was followed by perennial golf power Seattle Prep with 100 points, Eastside Catholic with 86 points, and Nathan Hale with 71 points.

The next match for Bainbridge will be today at Jefferson Park in Seattle.

Girls 8th at Salt Creek Invitational

The Spartan girls varsity cross country team finished 8th overall at the Salt Creek Invitational at Port Angeles Salt Creek State Park Saturday. There were 25 teams in attendance, with more than 700 runners competing.

Sophomore Kayley Turkheimer led Bainbridge with a time of 20:31 on the 2.9-mile course, and was followed by Kylie Dardis, 21:02; Mehgan Colkitt, 21:19; Skadi von Reis Crooks, 21:27 and Hannah Davis following right behind at 21:28. Sophie Kauffman ran a 22:50 and Anne Hillier rounded out the Spartan effort with a time of 23:20.

Nolan Amy finished third overall in the boys varsity race with a time of 15:05. Also running varsity, Jason Rowley clocked a 16:16; William Zuchero, 17:24; Trubee Davision 17:51; Colin O’Keefe 18:02; Bevin Taylor 18:20 and Noah Thompson finished with a 19:13. Junior varsity team members also had solid runs, with Ted Callahan coming in at 19:36, Andrew Bergh at 19:41 and freshman Connor Holloway finishing with a time of 19:52.

Sophomore Erika Bergman ran the fastest Bainbridge High girls time, a 20:25, to win the junior varsity race. The JV girls finished second overall with the help of Libby Van Dyke, 22:39; Mattie Molskness, 23:21; Kathryn Bachen, 23:29; Darcy Wallace, 25:35 and Ruthe Linne, 26:14.

The Spartan runners travel to Lincoln Park in West Seattle today for a meet against Eastside Catholic, Holy Names, O’Dea and Blanchet. Women’s start time is 3:40 p.m., men begin at 4:10 p.m.

Spikers stretch record to 4-0

The Bainbridge High School varsity volleyball team remained undefeated by pouncing on Nathan Hale Thursday night.

In what head coach Julie Miller called “our best overall match yet,” the Spartans moved to 4-0 on the season with the three game win.

“We played as a team both offensively and defensively — every player contributed to the game,” said Miller. “This was a step in the right direction in preparing us league play.”

Michelle Miller led the team with 19 kills, 16 digs and 4 aces. Setter Ashley Bice had 17 assists, 5 digs, an ace and 1 block.

The Spartans had contributions all the way down the roster in the 25-12, 25-15, 25-9 win: Alison Thies, 5 digs; Sabrina Tan, 8 digs, 1 ace; Hannah Stuart, 5 kills, 2 digs, 3 aces and a block; Sarah Braun, 3 kills, 3 aces; Samantha Nelson, 9 digs; Alexa Seidl, 10 assists, 1 ace; Ashley Anderson, 2 kills; Michelle Baggett, 7 digs; Christen Toepel, 2 kills, 1 ace; Tabitha Mabrey, 2 kills.

Team Ray beats up on Curtis, 13-8

Team Ray hosted Curtis Monday night at Ray Williamson Pool, and defeated the Vikings 13-8.

Goalie Stuart Stringer had another impressive evening in net for Bainbridge, shutting down the majority of Curtis’ shots on goal. Jake Christensen, Paul Clark and Jon Swanson scored goals for Team Ray, and co-captain Josh Johnson scored his first goal of the season.

Team Ray is now 3-2 going into this weekend’s WWPC Varsity Invitational at King County Aquatic Center.
