Several Spartans moved up a weight class, opening the door for young talent.

The Spartan wrestlers turned opponents on the ears for a stunning 45-21 victory over Eastside Catholic Thursday at Paski Gymnasium.

The effort started with Anna Lyons, who lost to a favored Justin Lobdell at 119 pounds in a 5-1 decision, but held out against a pin saving three team points.

“It was somewhat the luck of the draw, with her match starting the day,” said coach Steve Hohl, saying Lyons’ gritty performances have stirred the team.

“Lyons saved three points,” he said. “Then guys like Logan Bond and Rob Ferguson got inspired. The young guys stepped up.”

Ian Brooks and Brian Robert each moved up a weight class, making way for great performances by the young crew.

After Lyons lost to Lobdell by decision, Zach Smith and Peter Paskell combined to win by fall over Tyler Duncan and Drew Cochran. Smith drove his record to 27-1.

Then sophomore Logan Bond went to work, taking a 7-2 lead before pinning Erik Skoog halfway through the first period to earn his eighth win of the season.

Brooks and Robert pinned at 160 and 171 pounds respectively.

Brooks (21-7) made quick work of it, felling Brandon Pfahl 53 seconds into the match. Robert tangled with Kieffer Bryant into the third, pinning at 4:47.

Freshman Robert Ferguson kept things going against Chris Sisneros at 189 pounds, getting his third pin in five wins with 11 seconds to go in the middle period.

With Bainbridge holding a firm grip on the outcome, the meet still introduced some excitement near the finish.

Wrestling at 103 pounds, freshman Mathew Ritualo overcame a six-point deficit outscoring Case Cowin 7-1 in the dramatic third period.

Tied at nine apiece, neither wrestler scored in the first overtime. In the second Ritualo was declared the winner, pulling out a 10-9 victory.

“The young kids stepped up,” Hohl said, “and the veterans wrestled up for a great team win.”

The team effort left Bainbridge with three wins and four losses in Metro League play, with today’s Cross Sound Shootout at Bainbridge High School a final tune-up before next weekend’s Metro Tournament at West Seattle.

Today’s card starts at 2 p.m. among six teams including North Kitsap, North Mason, Port Townsend and Sequim.

The round-robin format means Bainbridge will have their big guns face some tough competition in preparation for the postseason.

Smith will likely face a 27-1 wrestler who has equalled his record, while Robert and Brooks also will go against top ranked competition.
