Hale steps down as Woodward Middle School principal

Woodward Middle School Principal Jeff Hale has resigned from his position, according to the Bainbridge Island School District.

Hale was named principal at WMS in March 2018. He previously had been the school’s assistant principal for two years, and took over in July 2018 following the retirement of Mike Florian.

The school district announced Hale’s departure in an electronic newsletter sent out Friday.

Hale said he was stepping down in a message sent to the families of students Feb. 6.

He wrote: “I wanted to let you know that as of June 30, 2020, I am officially resigning as principal of WMS.”

“I know this decision may come as a surprise, but the decision comes after considerable contemplation with the focus on how to support my personal well-being, as well as finding more balance in my life. My passion is working with students and as I look to the future, please know that I plan to pursue other avenues in education,” Hale added. “Thank you for the opportunity to serve this school for four years, both as principal and as associate principal. I have learned so much from the students and staff. Many of my fondest memories as an educator happened here at WMS.”

The district also said it was conducted a survey of parents, students, staff and community members “to find out what people would like to see in the next principal.”

The survey will be open through March 20, and officials said responses will be used to help guide the interview process.
