Commissioners for the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District will hold a public hearing next week to gather public input on proposed off-leash dog area alternatives at Battle Point Park.
The meeting is 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24.
Parks officials are looking at two alternatives for a possible off-leash dog area at Battle Point Park; near the horse arena, and in the pond area in the southeast corner of park. Either option will require a permit from the city of Bainbridge Island.
Other sites have been considered, according to the park district, and a third alternative at another location has been tabled until ownership matters are resolved.
Officials said the off-leash area is being considered in response to community concerns that have arisen about dog owners who let their pets run free in the district’s parks.
The hearing will be held at Strawberry Hill Center located at 7666 NE High School Road in Strawberry Hill Park.
No official board action is expected to be taken after the hearing.
Written comments on the proposals will also be accepted through June 1. Comments can be emailed to arlan@biparks.org; to Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District, PO Box 10010, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110; or dropped off at the Park District Administrative Office at Strawberry Hill Park.
