The Kitsap Humane Society recently raised more than $317,000 at its 27th annual Animal Krackers event that went virtual for the first time.
Over 1,100 supporters registered for the Oct. 16 event to raise money for shelter pets at the humane society. Funds will provide lifesaving care and support for more than 6,000 animals sheltered at KHS each year.
Due to COVID-19, Animal Krackers went online and allowed attendees to begin viewing the auction items from Oct. 12-16 with the live stream event taking place Oct. 16, according to a news release.
The event kicked off with a magic show presented by Nash Fung, who riled up the audience with his secret outfit change. The main event then began with a visit from Dr. Jen Stonequist, KHS director of Shelter Medicine, and her feline guest, Annika the kitten.
Later, the live auction included extravagant items, such as a dinner at Seattle’s Canlis restaurant, which was auctioned off for more than $9,000. One highlight of the night included a visit from Fig, a three-legged puppy who received care from the KHS veterinary team and is now available for adoption.
Other items and experiences auctioned off included having your pet featured on the cover of KHS’s annual calendar, dinner at Heyday Farm and a vacation in Jackson Hole, Wy. Before the last auction items were presented, KHS executive director Eric Stevens introduced an emotional video about caring for both pets and people when they need help the most.
Stevens discussed the importance of the support that Animal Krackers provides during the pandemic that has impacted both Kitsap Humane Society and animals in the community.
“Animal Krackers exceeded our expectations this year,” Stevens said. “We are grateful to the community and are thrilled with the turnout at our first virtual gala.”
