Activists on Bainbridge Island will join thousands of others across the country in a “Nobody Is Above the Law” protest Tuesday on the eve of what’s expected to be President Donald Trump’s impeachment.
News reports indicate a vote on two articles of impeachment will take place in the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday.
Tuesday’s demonstration on Bainbridge — to be held at the Waypoint Park next to the Winslow Way-Highway 305 intersection — is one of more than 570 protests planned nationwide in all 50 states.
Organizer Holly Brewer said the Bainbridge rally is part of the national mobilization to endorse the impeachment of the 45th president.
“Nobody Is Above the Law. That’s why we’re calling on Congress to impeach and remove Donald Trump,” Brewer told the Review in an email Monday. “The night before the House of Representatives takes a historic vote to impeach Trump, we’ll head to every congressional office and public square to declare that ‘Nobody Is Above the Law’ as representatives finalize their positions and senators look on.
“This will be visible, family friendly, a public gathering to demonstrate to our lawmakers that their constituents are behind them to defend the Constitution — and that Trump has left them no alternative to uphold their oath of office but to support impeachment and removal,” Brewer added.
The Bainbridge rally is planned for 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17.
Brewer said people attending the rally should plan to “bundle up and bring fun lanterns, battery operated Christmas lights, electric candles, etc.”
People are welcome to come at 3 p.m. or stop by later in the evening.
Brewer, a member of Bainbridge Indivisble, said 145 people have signed up so far for the Bainbridge event.
Indivisible is a national group set up by congressional staffers that has national and regional leadership. It is the largest resistance group set up after the Womxns March to locally resist the Trump agenda.
