Bainbridge Interim City Manager Morgan Smith said the investigation into allegations made by the Bainbridge Island Police Department against Police Chief Jon Fehlman began this week.

The city has brought in an outside investigator to look into the numerous allegations made by the guild in its no-confidence letter on the chief.

“She’s starting her work with us this week,” Smith said. “The investigation is now underway.”

“I believe that having external information developed about the allegations made by the guild will be very important for everyone,” Smith added.

“We will look at the results and use that to inform our decisions about next steps,” she said.

The guild gave Fehlman a vote of “no confidence” on June 11, and submitted a letter filled with claims of misdeeds by the chief to the city council.

Smith declined to name the person who is assisting the city.

The cost of the probe is uncertain, but the investigator has been retained at an hourly rate.

“It’s going to depend on the scope of her investigation and the amount of time it will take to complete it. And those are still being determined,” Smith said.

Smith estimated the investigation will take four to six weeks to complete.
