So far, 14 Bainbridge Island restaurants, along with KiDiMu and Island Fitness, will participate in the 2011 UNICEF Tap Project, where diners donate $1 for tap water they would normally enjoy free of charge.
Donations collected during World Water Week (March 20-26) will go to provide clean drinking water in Central African Republic, Togo and Vietnam. A dollar’s worth can provide up to 40 days of clean drinking water to children in villages.
“Every day, 4,100 children around the world die of preventable waterborne diseases,” said Krzysztofa McDonough, UNICEF Tap project volunteer and city coordinator for Seattle and Bainbridge Island. “I am moved by the response from the island community.”
Water-related illness is the second largest killer of children under the age of five.
Participating Bainbridge restaurants are: 122 Winslow Dining & Cheer, Bainbridge Thai, Casa Rojas Express, Casa Rojas Restaurant, Doc’s, Four Swallow’s Inn, Hitchcock, Local Harvest Restaurant, My Kids’s Cookies (café), San Carlos, Sawatdy Thai Cuisine, Shima Express, Shima Garden, Spice Route Cuisine of India and SuBi Japanese Restaurant.
Kids Discovery Museum will host a week’s worth of family friendly events, including an art contest and other water-related events. The first event will begin at 1:30 p.m. March 20.
