This past summer, island students, parents and teachers mourned the loss of former Woodward Middle School math teacher Mimi Fellores.

Community members will have the opportunity to honor her memory next week at a memorial service hosted by the school.

“She has been involved in the Bainbridge Island School District for 34 years,” said Woodward Principal Michael Florian.

“We felt like we wanted to celebrate her locally as well,” he said.

Fellores first began her work in Bainbridge education as a multi-cultural coordinator in the ‘80s. Since then, she has had a significant role in working with the different cultures on the island including involvement in tutoring programs for the Suquamish Tribe and other neighboring Native American communities.

Just before her sudden passing, she announced her retirement at the end of the 2012-2013 school year at Woodward Middle School.

Fellores passed away Sunday, July 21. She was 67.

At 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, Woodward staff are inviting the community to celebrate the life and work of the teacher and mentor at a memorial service held in the school gym.

The podium will be open for the Fellores family, friends and students to share memories.

At the service, local artists from the Suquamish Tribe will donate a hand-carved skippers paddle in her honor, and the school will announce a new scholarship fund in her name.

Members of the Native American community will serve fry bread after the event.

Parents have also donated a Chocolate Mimosa Tree from Fellores’ home country of the Philippines. Woodward staff planted the tree and dedicated it to Fellores following her passing this summer.
