The names of Dana Berg and Verda Averill will be added to the Kiwanis Memorial Center at Battle Point Park, the Kiwanis Club of Bainbridge Island announced.
The memorial was established to posthumously honor longtime Bainbridge Island residents who through their professional and community service made exceptional contributions to the welfare and enjoyment of our island community.
Berg and Averill’s names will be added to the Battle Point Memorial at a future date, Kiwanis officials said, but the bronze plaques will be presented to their family at a dinner at the St. Barnabas Parish Hall on Friday, Sept. 22. The event will last from 6 to 8 p.m.
Berg was selected for this honor because of her leadership in the Winslow business community, her avid support of the Bainbridge Farm community, the island environment, and her passion and leadership in support of non-motorized transportation on Bainbridge.
Averill was recognized for her years as owner and publisher of the Kitsap County Herald and the Bainbridge Review newspapers. She was the first woman to become president of the Washington Newspaper Publishing Association, and in retirement, she volunteered her talents at the Bainbridge Public Library, and also established the Bainbridge Island Library News.
The Kiwanis Club invites islanders to stop by the observatory at Battle Point to see the names of past honorees.
Those wishing to attend the honorarium can contact Fred Grimm, at 206-842-3573, for reservations by Sept. 18.
