Eagle Harbor Book Company will host a geek chic book launch, complete with science-themed cocktails, to celebrate the release of “Mama Gone Geek” author Lynn Brunelle’s latest offering: “Big Science for Little People.”

The event is planned for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Winslow bookstore.

Adults can expect some hands-on fun as they take part in some of the cool experiments that Brunelle has put together to keep kids (and their grown-ups) happy, learning and engaged.

A four-time Emmy Award-winning writer for “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” Brunelle has more than 25 years’ experience writing for people of all ages, across all manner of media.

Previously a classroom science, English and art teacher for kids K-12, an editor, illustrator and award-winning author of more than 45 titles, Brunelle has created, developed and written projects for Chronicle, Workman, National Geographic, Scholastic, Random House, Penguin, A&E, The Discovery Channel, Disney, ABC TV, NBC, NPR, The Annenburg Foundation, World Almanac, Cranium and PBS.

In this new book, parents will learn how to make their child’s first forays into science fun.

Brunelle offers 52 clever and easy experiments for things that will zip, zoom, fly, fizz, bubble and burst, with simple directions aimed at children ages 4 to 8.

Readers will create chemical reactions, explore gravity and friction, transform states of matter, play with air pressure, and much more.

Each project will engage children and the informative lessons will help parents when asked that inevitable question, “Why?”

Some of the EHBC staff favorites:

1. The Exploding Lunch Bag: Will you get out of the way before the vinegar and baking soda react with a fizzy burst?

2. Seed Hunt: Seek out whirly, sticky, and smooth seeds for a science-filled outdoor adventure.

3. The Marshmallow Launcher: Harness energy to fling sugary treats in the name of science.

Brunelle will also make an appearance at KiDiMu at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23.

Families (current and new members) are invited to meet her and enjoy a fun-filled afternoon at the museum featuring hands-on science activities from the new book.
