It’s must-win time for Lady Spartans

When the Bainbridge Spartan girls basketball team defeated the Rainier Beach Vikings earlier this season, the game was celebrated as coach Penny Gienger’s 200th victory as the Spartan head coach.

Gienger would, without question, trade that victory for the loss suffered by Bainbridge at the hands of the Vikings Friday afternoon at Bellevue Community College. Friday’s 50-46 loss to Rainier Beach came in the Spartan’s Sea-King AAA District tournament opener.

The Spartans entered the game as one of the top two seeds from the Metro League — needing to win just two district games to clinch a state tournament berth in the double-elimination format. The loss put the Spartan season on the line last night as they faced Issaquah in a loser-out contest at Ingraham High School.

If Bainbridge was victorious last night, the season stays alive for the blue and gold as they play at 8:15 p.m. Thursday night against the loser of the Cleveland-Chief Sealth game. A win there would put Bainbridge in the game for the third and fourth district seeds to state

Alice Russell led Bainbridge against Rainier Beach with 18 points. Morgan Zajonc had 15, Allie Picha 7, Haley Wiggins 4 and Tiana Gallagher 2.
