Jonathan J. Greenawalt was born Sept. 11, 1947 in Newton, Massachusetts, son of James and Eleanor Greenawalt. He passed away Oct. 29, 2013.

Jon graduated from Oklahoma State University with an associate degree in fire technology and a bachelor of science degree in occupational education.

He had worked as a firefighter in Sudbury, Maine. He was a deputy fire chief in Concord, New Hampshire and was then the youngest fire chief in Durham, N.H. Following that he worked as an editor for NFPA Magazine in Boston, Mass.

Jon was recruited to work at University of Washington where he was Director of Fire/Life Safety. Upon completion of that work, he went to work at the Bainbridge Island Fire Department as fire marshal. Jon ended his career in Washington with the Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Jon enjoyed spending time with friends and family, gardening and taking long walks along the ocean. He loved the Pacific Northwest and it was his wish to have his ashes scattered there where he had countless friends and colleagues.

Jon leaves behind the love of his life, Cathy and her two sons, Donald E. Abbott and his wife Jennifer and Joshua R. Abbott and his wife Megan.  He adored his grandchildren Devin, Ryan, Elise and Sam. Jon was a wonderful husband, Papa and friend and will be sorely missed.

A celebration of Jon’s life will be held at Bainbridge Island Fire Department Station 23, located at 12985 Phelps Road, at 4 p.m. Monday, July 7. Friends are respectively invited to attend to honor Jon’s life.
