Before classes began Sept. 6, Kempkes took part in a week-long orientation that included a civic engagement component in downtown Waterville, an introduction to academic and intellectual life at Colby, and an address by Robert Weisbrot, Christian A. Johnson Distinguished Teaching Professor of History, at Colby’s 199th Convocation.

A graduate of Bainbridge High School, Kempkes is the daughter of Rodney and Carolyn Kempkes of Bainbridge Island.

Colby’s Class of 2020 has 544 members.

It was selected from the largest pool of applications in Colby’s 204-year history, school officials said.

Founded in 1813, Colby is the first previously all-male college in New England to admit women.
