A 33-year-old Bremerton woman died Wednesday after attempting suicide while detained at the Kitsap County jail, police said.

According to a KCSO press release, officers found the victim unresponsive in her cell around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday. First responders applied CPR and took the woman to Harrison Medical Center.

Eforts to save her life failed and the woman died at the hospital late Wednesday night, Port Orchard Police Department Deputy Chief Dale Schuster said.

An autopsy was being conducted by the county coroner’s office Thursday afternoon to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

The Port Orchard Police Department was directed to conduct an investigation into the incident.

The investigation concluded Thursday, Schuster said, and referred further questions to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office directed questions to the Kitsap County Corrections Department, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.
