When the Bainbridge boys visited Lakeside back in December, the Lions lit up the court in the first stanza, rolling out to a 32-10 lead before the quarter ended.

“They shot about 90 percent the first quarter,” coach Scott Orness said, remembering the loss in Seattle. “After that, we played about even with them.”

So Bainbridge came out with something to prove in front of their home fans. Alternating between a man-to-man defense and a 3-2 zone, the Spartans kept the Lions guessing defensively, while taking the ball to the hole on the offensive end.

“Our goal (defensively) was to contest every shot they took,” Orness said.

Bainbridge jumped out to a 16-9 lead at the end of the quarter, with Spartan sophomore John Bruns scoring the final two points of the quarter after a nice feed from junior teammate Grant Leslie.

The second quarter was more of the same for Bainbridge, as the local boys went into the locker room up 29-18.

Spartan senior Schuyler Boone scored four points in each of the first two periods, but the three-year post player seemed to be on the edge of breaking out.

The third quarter belonged to Boone. He scored 12 of his game-high 23 points in the period. In fact, starting with his last two buckets of the first half, Boone scored 14 straight points for the Spartans in one streak — including a nice-touch trey early in the third quarter, and an ally-oop layup on a perfect feed from senior Zac Townsend.

Lakeside finally put together a quarter of their own in the fourth period, whittling down a 46-36 Spartan lead at the end of three to two points at 62-60 with just under a minute to play.

Townsend hit a running shot to push Bainbridge up 64-62, but Lakeside was knocking once again at 64-62 when Linus Chou buried a pair of free throws with 23 seconds to play.

Leslie hit the back end of a pair of free throws, and grabbed the game-ending rebound when Lakeside’s Jake Cox missed the mark on a three-point shot attempt in the last couple seconds.

The victory, combined with an Eastside Catholic loss last Friday night, clinched the final league playoff position for Bainbridge.

Besides Boone’s 23 points for Bainbridge, Leslie had 15, Bruns 8, Theo Miller 8, Townsend 6, Dan Canfield 3, and Cody Bludorn 2.

The Spartans will play next Wednesday

— probably at Nathan Hale — in a must-win Metro playoff opener.
