Ten islanders will seek seats on the Bainbridge City Council this year, according to a final candidate filing update from the Kitsap County Auditor’s office.
Debbi Lester and Virginia Paul were last minute additions to the Central Ward race, while Melanie Keenan filed Friday afternoon for the North Ward position.
Tim Jacobsen, Kirsten Hytopoulos and Curt Winston will square off for the South Ward post. Dee Dumont, Lester, Paul and Debbie Vann are running in the Central Ward. Keenan, Bob Scales and incumbent Debbie Vancil are seeking the North Ward seat.
The candidate filing period for the Nov. 3 general election ended at 5 p.m. Friday.
Keenan, a mother of two and a licensed geologist and hydrogeologist, said her top priorities for the city would be water use issues and better money management.
“I feel I represent change,” Keenan said, “and our citizens made it abundantly clear when they voted for the change of government that they want the city to get back on track and become fiscally responsible.”
Paul threw her hat into the Central Ward race late Friday.
Paul, a former teacher and a Winslow resident, could not be reached for comment this week. She endorsed the Vote Council Manager campaign and has publicly voiced opposition to utility fee increases which she said will dramatically impact those living on fixed incomes in the downtown area.
Lester was another late entry for the Central Ward seat. She is the editor/publisher of Art Access magazine and has been active in a number of citizen groups, including the Ferry Community Partnership.
Lester is married to Ryan Vancil, son of council member Debbie Vancil.
Dee DuMont joined the race for the Central Ward early Friday.
A 22-year Winslow resident, DuMont is a graduate of Michigan State University and is a former community college instructor.
She said her campaign would focus on reigning in overspending and reducing litigation through community outreach.
Parks, schools, fire department
Friday also saw a flurry of filings for posts on the Bainbridge Metropolitan Park and Recreation District board, Bainbridge Island School District board and Bainbridge Fire Department commission.
Paul Bang-Knudsen and Gregory Millerd were late entries for the park board’s Position 4, which will be left open by departing incumbent David Shorett.
Jay Kinney and Bob Selzler filed for the same position early Friday.
Open positions
There were no candidates for the three Crystal Springs Water District positions at the end of the regular filing period. A three-day special filing period will begin Monday. If no candidates have filed at the end of special period, incumbents will continue to serve until the next odd-year election.
