Local man takes over as Kitsap News Group editor

Following the upcoming retirement of longtime editor Steve Powell in April, Tyler Shuey will be promoted to editor of the Kitsap News Group and its five newspapers.

Shuey currently covers North Kitsap as a reporter and has been assisting Powell performing some editing duties the past few years for the weekly Bainbridge Island Review, North Kitsap Herald and Port Orchard Independent, along with the monthly Kingston Community News and Central Kitsap Reporter. Shuey has been with the Kitsap News Group for about six years and has also reported in Central Kitsap and Bainbridge Island.

“I am humbled and honored to be named editor of our prestigious Kitsap publications,” Shuey said. “Steve has done an excellent job training me up to this point and I am grateful for his wisdom, experience and expertise. Upholding our news coverage to the consistently high standards it has maintained over the years is absolutely the goal. I’m excited about what our team can accomplish going forward.”

A graduate of Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow College of Communication in 2018, Shuey reported on sports for the Daily Evergreen student publication during his junior and senior years. He also served as sports editor for a semester.

Shuey was born and raised in North Kitsap, graduating from Kingston High School in 2014. He lives in Hansville.

“Tyler has come a long way in learning the job the past few months, and I have confidence he will work hard to continue the excellence of the Kitsap News Group papers,” Powell said.

Powell is retiring after 42 years in the business. Almost 68, he said he and his wife Debbie and labradoodle Wazzu plan to spend a lot of time traveling over the next few years.
