A Bainbridge Island couple that woke up to the sounds of something that went bump in the night discovered that something was a burglar in their Village Circle home Monday.

The thief was apprehended after the homeowner chased the man through the Winslow-area neighborhood and tackled him after he tripped while trying to get away.

Bainbridge Police said the homeowner was alerted to the burglar 3:30 a.m. Monday after his wife heard noises after they had gone to bed and he went to investigate. He then discovered the burglar on his way out of the home, with a backpack filled with stolen booty.

As the man gave chase and yelled at the fleeing bandit, others in the neighborhood heard the commotion and called 911.

Once the resident caught up with the burglar, he held him to the ground and pushed his face into the dirt until officers arrived.

The alleged burglar, Cory Glenlynn Smith, 25, is a resident of the North Kitsap area. Officers found items in his possession from the Village Circle home, including a laptop computer and other electronics, in addition to other articles that were stolen from a car in the area. Police said he entered the home through a locked French door.

Smith is being held on $120,000 bail for felony burglary, vehicle prowling and escape from community custody, as well as misdemeanor assault and theft, in the Kitsap County Jail.

Bainbridge Police Commander Sue Shultz warned islanders to be careful when encountering burglars.

“We never encourage victims of a crime to pursue the suspect, because you never know if that suspect is armed and it could create a dangerous situation,” Shultz said.

“We are glad everyone is OK,” she added.
