An alleged car thief who ran from Bainbridge Island police in 2009 and was featured on “America’s Most Wanted” was arrested last week in Oregon.
Bainbridge officials said Bradley Steven Robinett was arrested the afternoon of Monday, June 2 by the Hillsboro, Oregon police department in a Fred Meyer parking lot.
Officials said police were patrolling the parking lot of the department store while using an automated license plate reader that takes pictures of plates and compares the numbers with those in a database of wanted vehicles.
Officers were then altered to a stolen 2014 Kia Sorento, and discovered the plates were reported stolen in Portland, Oregon and the vehicle was stolen from King County in Washington.
Police waited for the driver, whom they later identified as Robinett, and arrested him on accusations of robbery, a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle and contempt of court, as well as federal fugitive warrants.
Robinett, 45, was taken to the Washington County Jail where he is being held on multiple local and federal charges.
Robinett is the suspect in a police chase that happened near Battle Point Park on Sept. 12, 2009. Police believe that Robinett fled authorities when they determined the vehicle he was driving had been reported stolen from Beaverton.
Robinett left the stolen vehicle and ran on foot to the shoreline and escaped from the island by paddling off in a kayak.
Police found a stolen handgun and ballistic body armor inside the stolen vehicle, and officials said forensic testing of the recovered evidence tied Robinett to the handgun and other items in the vehicle.
Robinett was once featured on in episode of the television program “America’s Most Wanted,” which was filmed on Bainbridge Island and aired in April 2011. The popular show asks viewers to call in tips to help find fugitives from justice.
“It’s a good feeling knowing this guy is finally behind bars” said Police Chief Matthew Hamner. “My officers remember the case well, and a little cheer went up in the squad room when we heard of his arrest.”
