A 24-year-old Silverdale man hit a 2-year-old with the metal end of a fly swatter as discipline for knocking over a kitchen shelf.

The man was in Kitsap County Superior Court Aug. 26 after being arrested on a warrant from 2022 and charged with third-degree assault. He faces five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Court records show Kitsap deputies responded to the 3600 block of Princeton Lane at 2:09 p.m. April 11, 2022 because a husband was walking around the house with a gun.

The wife said she got home from her graveyard shift — they both worked active duty with the Navy —and her husband wouldn’t let her see their child. When she finally was able to check the diaper she saw welts on the baby’s back. The husband said he hit the child with a fly swatter as punishment for knocking over the kitchen shelf.

She said she couldn’t stay with someone like that, so he got a gun out of the safe, pointed it to his chin and said he was going to commit suicide. She calmed him down, and he left. Officers said they saw two marks on the baby’s back that looked like the imprint of the handle so it had to be done with a lot of force. The suspect was arrested, but released, and was only recently arrested again.
