Officers spent over six hours trying to talk a man off the ledge of a parking garage after he went after a security guard with a hatchet and a metal pipe.

A 42-year-old Bremerton man was in Kitsap County Superior Court March 11 with bail set at $100,000. He was charged with second-degree assault with a deadly weapon. He faces 10 years in prison and $20,000 in fines.

Court records say Bremerton police responded March 10 at 10:04 a.m. to the 400 block of Washington Avenue.

The suspect refused to leave a parking garage, and then hit a security guard’s vehicle with a pipe and hatchet and threatened him, too. The metal pipe cracked the windshield, and the suspect started kicking the vehicle. Later the suspect ran up to the driver’s side and raised the hatchet as if to strike, alarming the security guard, who said he felt his life was in danger. The guard swiftly drove off.

Later, the man started yelling and cursing at officers. One officer said he spent an hour trying to talk the suspect off the ledge. “He continued to curse and scream at me,” and said they would have to shoot him, the officer reported. The suspect was seen sharpening the hatchet on the concrete and waving it at officers.

Kitsap SWAT responded, and officers spent about six hours pleading with the suspect to surrender. He finally did, and was taken to St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale for treatment.
