The city of Bainbridge Island has reached a tentative agreement with the city’s police union.

City Manager Doug Schulze said mediation over a new contract has wrapped up and a proposed agreement has gone to the Bainbridge Island Police Guild for a vote.

If approved, the contract will then be sent to the city council for ratification.

Mediation over the proposed agreement started in late April and finished last week.

Contract talks, which had been on-again, off-again for more than a year, came to an impasse this spring. Sticking points in early discussions included changes to health care benefits, job security, salary increases and the take-home policy for police vehicles.

“I feel good about it,” Schulze said about the new contract. “I think both sides ended up compromising on where we initially thought we might end up.”

“As with most labor contracts, there’s give-and-take,” he added. “I think we ended up in a fair position.”

The city council is expected to talk about the proposed contract in an executive session Monday, June 16.

The proposed contract will cover three years, with a start date of Jan. 1, 2013. The new agreement would expire on Dec. 31, 2015.

The term of the contract, Schulze said, means the city will probably begin negotiations anew at this time next year.
