The Bainbridge Island City Council has decided to move forward with an initiative to install bike lanes down North Madison Avenue.
At the council meeting Wednesday, Interim Public Works Director John Cunningham proposed a construction contract for more bike lanes to be considered during the Sept. 11 council session under “unfinished business.”
The improvement project is the second phase of bike lane renovations that were completed in 2011. After two years, Cunningham brought the project back into the conversation this week as part of the city’s Capital Improvement Plan.
With Phase Two, about 2,600 feet of asphalt-widened shoulders will be added from Valley Road to Winther Road on North Madison Avenue. Additionally, the improvements will include a ditch and drain realignment.
While the design for the new bike lanes will be planned in-house by city staff, the project is budgeted at $200,000 for construction.
The city’s Street Fund will cover $27,000 of the construction costs, and the remaining $173,000 will come from the Surface Transportation Program, a federal grant the city received this year for road improvements.
Bids will be opened Sept. 9 for potential construction companies.
