Two multiple-car crashes that happened within minutes of each other on Highway 305 left traffic jammed on Bainbridge Island Sunday afternoon.
The collisions — one at the Sportsman Club Road intersection and the other just south of Koura Road — left the southbound lane of the highway blocked for more than an hour.
The first crash occurred just after 11 a.m. Sunday and involved three vehicles at the Highway 305/Sportsman Club Road intersection. Details were not immediately available, but the first car stopped at the intersection was rear-ended by a following vehicle, which was then struck by another southbound driver.
No one appeared seriously injured in that crash, and the backup of traffic may have been a factor in a following collision that happened moments later, also in the southbound lane of 305, roughly a mile north on the highway south of Koura Road.
At least five vehicles were involved in that crash, a series of rear-end collisions that left the southbound lane of 305 blocked by damaged cars and responding units from the Bainbridge Island Fire Department, including multiple fire engines and medic units. Bainbridge police were also at both collision sites, talking to those involved in the collisions.
Multiple vehicles from both crash scenes had to be towed away.
Southbound traffic on Highway 305 was diverted to Koura Road until the highway was cleared Sunday.
