The NAACP of Bremerton recently submitted a statement requesting that state Rep. Greg Nance of Bainbridge Island correct statements he made at a debate last month.
Nance indicated he voted for a police pursuit law and parents bill of rights law after consulting with local NAACP president Robert Harris. But Harris said in the letter that he made it clear in a meeting with Nance earlier that the NAACP unit did not support the police pursuit law because of its negative community impacts, including potential for injury and property damage for those involved in pursuits and bystanders.
In the letter, Harris also says he has had no conversations with lawmakers regarding the other law and had not taken a position on it.
Right after the debate, Harris asked Nance to retract the statement.
Nance did not respond to an email request for comment by deadline. But he did say on an NAACP Facebook post to Harris that restoring police pursuits was favored by voters 80%, but he would be interested in talking to him about amending the law to keep neighbors safe.
He also says that in the debate he did not mean to imply the NAACP agreed with him on the parental rights law—only that he had extensive community consultations with that organization and others.
