Eagle Harbor Book Company, the iconic Bainbridge book store in downtown Winslow, is under new management. Longtime islanders Jane and Dave Danielson have bought the store from Morley Horder, Tim Hunter and René Kirkpatrick.

Jane Danielson has been a bookseller and the events coordinator at Eagle Harbor Books for several years, and Dave Danielson is a former maritime law attorney who has spent winters in Africa in recent years focusing on human rights law. They are planning to stay closer to home these days and enjoy life as booksellers.

Horder said that the Danielson’s backgrounds and passion for books were critical in the decision to hand off the business to them.

“Since moving to Bainbridge Island, this special community, and particularly this bookstore, have nourished and supported me and I plan to pay it forward,” said Jane. “We will continue to provide meticulous service, while expanding our focus to becoming a hub for cultural discourse and community discussions.”

Eagle Harbor Books has been Bainbridge Island’s literary epicenter for 45 years. Horder had been the owner since 1997. Since then the book store developed a finely curated selection of books and gifts and has hosted diverse events and guests including authors, poets, scholars, activists, artists, musicians and storytellers of all kinds.

In 2012, Horder brought in two partners, to manage all aspects of the business, allowing him to focus on several other interests, including development of technology for independent bookstores. For the last four years,  Kirkpatrick and Hunter — who remain on staff — have successfully guided the shop through the many challenges facing independent bookstores across the country today. The store has also expanded its offerings to include eBooks and digital audio books as well.

The new owners said they plan to continue to expand the literary landmark in new directions, while preserving everything customers love about the shop today.

“Our knowledgeable staff has been a key to our success,” Danielson said. “People come in to discover some of the best books available today and that’s when they learn just how good the booksellers are. We also listen to our customers and get great suggestions and new directions from them. Timeliness and follow through on special orders will remain a significant area of service.”
