Church moves to Playhouse

Cedars Unitarian Universalist Church is playing to ever larger crowds these days, prompting a move from Hyla School to the Playhouse for worship services.

“We’ve outgrown the Hyla School Auditorium,” church board president Jason Klein said. “Our membership has nearly doubled in the last three years, to more than 160 – not including the many friends who attend regularly.”

Starting Aug. 14, Cedars will hold services at the Playhouse, which seats 240. Klein attributes the growth in membership to the Rev. Drew Johnston having come onboard as the first full-time settled minister in the group’s 46-year history.

Summer services will be at 10 a.m. The winter schedule of services, at 9 and 10:30 a.m., will begin again in September. Religious education for children of all ages is provided at all services.

Movie party for BAC

Bainbridge Arts and Crafts is having a movie party on Aug. 18 at Bainbridge Cinemas in The Pavilion. Wine and “substantial hors d’oeuvres” will be served starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by a screening of “Casablanca” at 7:15. Tickets are $20 for movie-goers 21 and older. BAC extends special thanks to Jeff Brein and Sam Granato of Bainbridge Cinemas for making the event possible. It is part of BAC’s “Party for the Arts” fund-raising activities, which support visual arts education programs in the community.

Music and art at Waterfront

As part of the Bainbridge Island Park and Recreation District’s free Wednesday night summer concerts in Waterfront Park, Side Project plays there tonight from 7-8:30 p.m.

Each concert by the ensemble combines innovative and original pop and rock with mixed-media such as live paintings, photography, sculpture, cued video and silent films.
