Superintendent Laurynn Evans says the North Kitsap School District is facing critical staffing and substitute shortages that could result in moving certain classes or schools to remote learning.

In a letter sent to families last week, She also says closing some classrooms or even entire school buildings is possible.

The letter states NKSD is seeking to hire up to 25 people.

“This will likely impact our ability to serve children in person in the coming weeks,” Evans’ letter states. “We have been doing everything possible to ensure we have an adult in every classroom every day. We have regularly had principals, assistant principals, district-level leaders, and other staff, all of whom have critical responsibilities during a typical school day, provide classroom support. However, we are concerned that we will not be able to cover all absences and vacancies every single day. We do not want to do this, but if we cannot hire additional substitutes and staff, we may have no other option.”

NKSD is also facing bus driver shortages that have already impacted transportation routes. The letter states the district is using every available resource to cover bus routes and that they are actively recruiting for new drivers and substitute drivers.
