A nighttime fire in downtown Winslow has claimed the life of one person, authorities said late Thursday.

Bainbridge firefighters were called to a fire in an upper floor of the complex of storefronts at Winslow Green in Bainbridge’s downtown just before 8 p.m.

The two-alarm commercial fire prompted a massive response of on-island and off-island emergency responders, and a crowd gathered on nearby sidewalks to watch as firefighters knocked down the flames pouring from the upper part of the complex.

The victim was not immediately identified.
