Two men accused of stealing a $12,000 boat and trailer from outside a north Bainbridge Island home earlier this week were charged with first-degree theft Tuesday in Kitsap County District Court.
Ryan Jacob Schechert, 39, of Poulsbo, and David Arnold Poach, 42, were each charged with one complaint of felony theft.
Poach was also charged with possession of methamphetamine.
Both men are being held in Kitsap County Jail. Bail has been set at $35,000 for Poach, and $25,000 for Schechert.
The pair were arrested Jan. 4 just after they crossed the Agate Pass Bridge with the stolen boat and trailer.
According to court documents, the duo allegedly stole the boat just after 7:30 a.m. Monday from outside a home in the 15900 block of Euclid Avenue.
The crime was discovered after the pair towed the boat and trailer away with a Chevy Silverado, but the trailer become unhitched from the truck and went off the roadway. It then hit a CenturyLink telephone junction box and destroyed it.
A witness then walked up to the men, according to court documents, and started a conversation as they tried to hook the trailer back up to the boat. The man also started taking pictures with his cell phone, and recognized the boat as the one owned by a neighbor.
After the pair drove away on Euclid Avenue, the witness contacted the boat owner and they both gave chase in their own cars.
The boat owner caught up to the pair as they drove north on Highway 305 and called 911 just as they passed Agatewood Road.
Bainbridge Police Officer Jon Bingham was in his patrol car near Reitan Road and Highway 305 and saw the truck and trailer pass by; he pulled the Silverado over at the Agate Pass Park and Ride in Suquamish as units from the Suquamish Police Department and the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office arrived to assist.
Police were shown a photo taken by the witness of Schechert attaching the boat and trailer to the Chevy truck.
Schechert allegedly told police that he and Poach took the boat and trailer, and that he attached the trailer to the truck and Poach was the driver.
Bainbridge police also found drug-related items in the truck and a field test showed indications of methamphetamine.
Authorities said the pair tried to attach the boat trailer to the truck with a wrong-sized trailer ball and rope. A pair of bolt cutters was also found on the front canvas of the boat.
Conviction of first-degree theft can result in a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a $20,000 fine.
Possession of a controlled substance can result in a maximum five-year prison sentence and $10,000 fine upon conviction.
