A 63-year-old Poulsbo resident, John Skubic, was killed Friday on Central Valley Road after he reportedly was hit by a vehicle while he was riding a bicycle.
Skubic was identified by the Kitsap County Coroner’s Office as the victim, and an autopsy is scheduled for this week. A suspect has been arrested, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and rescue personnel from Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue responded to the 8000 block of Central Valley Road NE, north of Foster Road NE, at 12:48 p.m. for a bicyclist that had been struck by a vehicle. The vehicle fled the scene and was described as an older gray SUV.
When rescue personnel arrived, they found the bicyclist lying on the ground and unresponsive. Despite lifesaving efforts, Skubic died at the scene. The initial investigation indicates that the bicyclist was riding southbound on the shoulder of Central Valley Road and was struck by a Jeep Cherokee, which was also traveling southbound, and had driven onto the roadway shoulder.
Soon after, a KCSO deputy located the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment complex on NE Fairgrounds Road. Investigators contacted the owner of the vehicle, a 28-year-old transient from the Poulsbo area, and he was taken into custody. The suspect was booked into the county jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide and felony hit and run, according to KCSO.
