Roughly 21 percent of Bainbridge Island voters have already made their choices in the 2017 Primary Election.
Time is quickly running out for the rest. Last-minute voters have until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 to cast ballots in this year’s Primary Election.
Bainbridge voters will make choices in just two races on the ballot, but just one of those races is a contested one.
In that race, three candidates are vying for the District 5 position on the Bainbridge Island School Board. Incumbent Sheila Jakubik is running for re-election, and is being challenged by Christina Wakefield and Jesse Burns.
The other race on the Bainbridge primary ballot is for the District 7, North Ward city council seat.
Kevin Fetterly and Joe Deets are seeking the seat; incumbent Councilman Val Tollefson earlier decided against seeking a second term on the seven-member council.
Also on the ballot in that race is J. Mack Pearl, who has since withdrawn from the contest (but not in time to have his name removed from the ballot).
The two candidates in each race who receive the most votes will advance to November’s General Election.
Turnout for the election will likely follow historic trends in past off-year primaries, with approximately one-fourth of Bainbridge’s eligible registered voters expected to cast ballots.
On Bainbridge, there are currently 18,714 active registered voters.
According to the Kitsap County Elections Division, a total of 4,011 ballot packages have been received by Tuesday afternoon.
Not all of those ballots may be ready for the count that will begin after polls close at 8 p.m., however. Ballots not ready for processing Tuesday night will be counted during subsequent tallies.
