Molly Hetherwick has been hired as the new education and general assignment reporter for the Bainbridge Island Review.
She replaces Nancy Treder, who resigned to go to law school.
“Molly is a really good writer,” Review editor Steve Powell said. “I know islanders will love her. It’s great to have another BI reporter again.”
Hetherwick graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 2020 with a double major in Literature and Biology. She pursued journalism as a staff reporter and Campus Desk editor at City On A Hill Press, the student-run newspaper at the college.
Hetherwick and her team of reporters covered all on-campus events, union-university relations, campus politics and university expansion. Standout stories included coverage of the historic AFSCME worker’s strike throughout the UC system and the ongoing student housing crisis. Hetherwick discovered her love of journalism — particularly science journalism — as a student at UCSC.
After graduating, Hetherwick interned for the San Francisco Examiner and was hired as a full-time general assignment reporter. She covered breaking news, education, public health and local interest features, like the Dungeness crab industry. In addition, she wrote scientific and bird-related pieces for “The Gull,” the monthly newsletter published by the Golden Gate Bird Alliance.
Originally from the Bay Area, Hetherwick moved to Seattle last year. She was head coxswain on her youth crew team for seven years and competed at the state level every season. Her boat placed at the Head of the Charles race in Boston, MA in 2015. She is an avid birder; during summer of 2023, she worked at Mount Rainier National Park doing backcountry bird surveys.
