Bainbridge Arts & Crafts has announced that it has raised $10,000 in donations for its Rosalyn Gale Powell scholarship, securing funds for the prestigious award for the next 10 years.

The longstanding nonprofit art gallery in downtown Winslow gives the $1,000 scholarship annually to a graduating high school senior from Bainbridge Island who plans to study art in college.

The scholarship, one of three awarded by the gallery each year, is given based on the recipient’s demonstration of excellence in one artistic medium.

Well-known artist and longtime BAC supporter Rosalyn Gale Powell established the fund in 1971 to give young artists a leg up on their art studies.

She maintained the scholarship for many years by donating a portion of the proceeds from sales of her work.

On May 28, BAC held a scholarship fundraiser at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art that brought together Powell’s friends, family and supporters. BIMA generously hosted the event in its Rachel Feferman Gallery, where the exhibit, “Rosalyn Gale Powell: Garden Path,” remains on view until June 7.

“We are absolutely thrilled and extremely grateful for our community’s support of this scholarship program,” said BAC Executive Director Susan Jackson “Rosalyn was a huge champion of Bainbridge Arts & Crafts and of student artists, and her enormous contribution to the arts on Bainbridge Island must not be forgotten.”

“Thanks to our donors’ overwhelming generosity, we are able to carry on her legacy for many years to come,” she added.
