The Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island will host a global health expert for a presentation, “Progress Report on Global Health and Development,” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 16 at Wing Point Golf & Country Club.
Chris Elias, president of the Global Development Program at the Gates Foundation, will describe the progress the global heath and development communities have made toward the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, focusing on how the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation supports the UN goals of bringing a much-improved standard of health and well being to those most burdened by inequity.
He will use case studies to show what the Gates Foundation sees as working in these areas, progress that has been made, and challenges still ahead.
Elias leads the Gates Foundation’s efforts to accelerate delivery of proven health care products and solutions to those who need them most — especially women and children in under-served communities of the world. The organization’s focus is in five primary program areas: family planning; maternal, newborn and child health; nutrition; polio; and vaccine delivery.
Elias holds an doctor of medicine degree from Creighton University, completed postgraduate training in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and has a master’s degree in public health from the University of Washington. He was a fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from Creighton University.
The Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island invites the public to attend the dinner meeting to hear the presentation. There is a charge ($25 per person) and reservations are required.
Those interested in attending must RSVP by Wednesday, April 11. Contact Kate Smith (jksmith6225@gmail.com) for more information and to register.
