Sales and use taxes across Kitsap County — including Bainbridge Island — went up on Jan. 1 by one-tenth of 1 percent (.001).
Businesses started collecting higher taxes on sales this week, and persons and businesses in Kitsap County will pay the new rate for items purchased for business or personal use.
Taxes raised from the .001 increase will be used to fund chemical dependency and mental health treatment services.
The local sales tax rate is now .022, and the state sales tax rate is .065. The total sales tax rate is now .087.
