School bells about to start ringing again

It seems like back-to-school ads started appearing right after it let out, but now it really is time for back-to-school.

School doesn’t start until Sept. 3 on Bainbridge Island, but planning meetings with parents and other events start in less than two weeks.

What’s being called an Executive Functioning Seminar for BI school district parents-guardians will take place Aug. 26 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Bainbridge High School. The free event will be led by Sarah Ward, co-director of Cognitive Connections. Attendees will learn dozens of easy-to-implement strategies to help children initiate tasks, follow routines, transition between tasks, think in an organized way and encourage self-initiative to manage homework.

On Aug. 29, Welcome Wildcats will take place at Woodward Middle School. On Aug. 30, there will be meet and greets at Sakai Intermediate along with Blakely, Ordway and Xalilc elementary schools.

On Sept. 3 there will be Spartan Start-Up at BHS and Orientation at Eagle Harbor High School. On Sept. 4 there will be a Welcome Back Orientation at Mosaic and Sept. 6 is the Odyssey First Friday Ice Cream Social.

If you are interested in turning out for a fall sport better be ready – now. Practices normally start two weeks before school starts. Football’s first game is at West Seattle Sept. 5. Coach is Dan Schoonmaker. Boys tennis starts Aug. 26 at 3:30 p.m. at the high school tennis courts. Coach is Mary McCombs.Their first match is Sept. 10 at home against Olympic. Tryouts for girls soccer will be Aug. 26-30 from 8-10 a.m. at Battle Point. Coach is Katie Drovdahl. Their first game is Sept. 10 at home against Central Kitsap.

Girls volleyball is coached by Holly Rohrbacher. Their first match is at Olympic Sept. 12. Girls swim/dive has its first meet Sept. 18 at Bremerton. It is coached by Krista Pal. Preseason training goes from Aug. 21-Sept. 1 with regular practice starting Sept. 5. Girls and Boys Cross Country has their first meet Sept. 18 at Kingston. Coach is Anne Howard. Practices start Aug. 26.
