Senator Murray blasts change that could make birth control more costly

U.S. Senator Patty Murray said a plan by the Trump Administration to make women pay more for health care “couldn’t be more wrong.”

Murray (D-WA), ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, said this week an interim rule change that the Office of Management and Budget is considering that would allow employers to claim broad exemptions to cover affordable birth control for women.

Under the Affordable Care Act, approximately 55 million women currently benefit from coverage of preventative services with no out-of-pocket costs — including services covering birth control.

Murray released the following statement after news reports of the new rule.

“By allowing employers to deny women affordable birth control, President Trump is telling women their health and economic security do not matter.

“Well, the Trump Administration couldn’t be more wrong — and Democrats and women across the country are going to continue to make that very clear,” Murray said.
