Senator Patty Murray continued her call Wednesday for an independent investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 Election.
In a statement this week, Murray (D-WA) said: “The time for excuses from the White House is over.”
“It grows clearer by the hour that far too many legitimate questions must be answered sooner rather than later, or else we risk further compromising our national security and the safety of citizens, the public’s faith in our institutions, and the very principles of our democracy,” Murray continued.
“Our founders very wisely set up a system of checks and balances, and it’s time for Republicans to join us to put country over party and allow a special prosecutor to conduct an independent investigation,” she said.
Murray will attend a classified briefing Thursday on President Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey that is open to all U.S. senators with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
Trump previously has said he was thinking of the investigation into Russian tampering with the election when he fired Comey.
And earlier this week, news reports surfaced that Trump allegedly asked Comey to stop the investigation into Michael Flynn, a former Trump campaign staffer who became Trump’s national security advisor but resigned after he lied about earlier contacts with Russian officials.
