Among a room full of friends and supporters, Jane Allan left her position as the director of the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center, and handed the reigns to her successor, Sue Barrington.

“I’m truly blessed to have worked at the center over 13 years,” Allan told a filled room at the St. Barnabas parish hall.

“When I started I had been a lawyer and a planner; very left-brained. Now I’m proud to say that through all my time at the center and the influence of all the seniors, I’m a hugger, a laugher and a big silly person.”

Allan told of her job that brought her love each day. That love was clearly present among a crowd who appreciates the hard work she has done over the years.

It was an afternoon that filled the parking lot of St. Barnabas to the brim. Food was set across tables in the parish hall that spanned the savory and the sweet.

Allan was entertained with stories from her time as director, as well as a performance by the senior center’s line dancers.

Mayor Debbi Lester read from a poem she wrote for the occasion, “Jane on the Spot.”

John DeMeyer, recreation services director for the Bainbridge Island parks district, counted down 10 reasons Allan will be missed: her healthy snacks; intelligence; positive outlook; her laughter; her caring nature; ability to view issues from different perspectives; she’s a team player; she generates ideas; she’s collaborative. And Bill, her husband, who is also popular around the senior center.

But while she won’t hold the title of director, DeMeyer noted that she won’t be entirely absent.

“Luckily you’re just down the street,” he said. “We know where you live.”

Allan also announced Barrington as her successor.

“Sue comes with so much passion and caring,” Allan said. “I think the center is in great hands and will only grow.”
