The 1-2 senior scoring punch of Henry Guterson and Spencer Evans put 34 points on the board and led the Bainbridge Spartans to a 57-37 romp over the Nathan Hale Raiders in the Bainbridge High School gymnasium Monday night.
Guterson poured in 18 points – all from outside the arc, nailing 6-of-11 from three-point land. He was 4-for-7 in the first half alone, forcing Nathan Hale to discard the zone and match up in a man-to-man defense.
While Guterson was giving the Raiders headaches from the outside, Evans was finding openings in the paint, finishing with 16 points for the contest. Evans wasn’t alone moving bodies in the middle: James Toepel, Schuyler Boone and Mark Korsak all pounded the boards for the blue and gold.
After jumping out to a 14-10 first quarter lead, the Spartans opened the second period with authority, as Guterson buried a couple of treys while Boone cashed in on a bucket from the inside, 22-10.
The Raiders knocked the lead down to eight at 23-15, before Evans converted on a basket-plus-free-throw effort, and Korsak sprinted free for a breakaway after a steal by senior defensive standout and playmaker Kevin Hebner.
The Spartans didn’t rest long on the 30-16 halftime lead, putting together an 8-2 run to push the margin out to double-decades at 38-18.
Bainbridge maintained the 20-point margin at 47-27 on a Korsak bucket to start the final period, but the Raiders came back with three straight treys to cut the lead to 47-36.
Hebner broke the Nathan Hale run with a bomb from outside the arc, kicking off a 10-1 Bainbridge scoring run that wrapped up the win for the Spartans.
Joe Picha had 6 points for Bainbridge, Toepel 4, Korsak 4, Boone 4, Hebner 3, and Zac Townsend 2.
The win comes on the heels of last Friday night’s 53-33 loss to Blanchet. Evans led Bainbridge with 12 points, Boone added 7, Korsak 5, Picha 4, Guterson 3 and Ross Maloney 2.
Bainbridge took on Metro Division rival O’Dea on the Spartan hardwood last night, and will be at Lakeside on Friday night.
